This second chance of taking pictures of fireworks proved to be worth it... I still didn't use my tripod, however I did use a slower shutter speed and got many more worthwhile shots.

I set my aperture to f/8, my shutter speed to 1.6 seconds and rested my camera on my knee to keep it from shaking too much, then I focused on the night sky (infinity)... the trick is to anticipate when to press the shutter button, which I do as soon as I see the firework start to explode.
